Sodium bicarbonate (also known as baking soda) is a refined, soluble, white powder used as a leavening agent helping to soften bath water, cleanse in mouth care and absorbent in deodorants.
Sodium Bicarbonate is soothing, neutralising and versatile.
It can be used to soften bathwater and boost circulation, and combined with citric acid and hot water to create bubbles.
When added to a shampoo bar base, this silky powder forms a soapy paste which gently cleanses the hair and skin.
In deodorants it is able to neutralise acids in sweat limiting the growth of odour producing bacteria, as well as absorbing moisture. We use sodium bicarbonate in all our deodorants, whether for body or feet.
It is noted for its cleansing and protective effects on the gums and teeth. In the mouth, when mixed with saliva, sodium bicarbonate creates a hostile environment for acidic bacteria as it increases the pH of saliva. An ideal ingredient in mouthwash as the gentle fizzing of the sodium bicarbonate and citric acid will cleanse and deodorise the mouth without the use of alcohol.
